The three-star Hotel Garda may blend in with the dozens of other properties located around Milan's central train station, but on the inside it's the true budget gem on the block. With polished marble floors, regally striped couches and a formal feel, the Garda is pleasantly sophisticated. (You'd never guess that its proprietors-a friendly family-also live on the first floor.)
Rooms are lively, with painted doorways, damask-style wallpaper, and clean color schemes in red, yellow and blue. Recent renovations are evident, and while some of the furniture could be classified as bland, the owners have jazzed things up with contrasting wood and attractive artwork. All rooms boast air-conditioning, a minibar, TV and telephone. Bathrooms have cute blue tiles that have seen a few years of wear-and-tear.
The staff recalled our favorite aunties, who manage to "just throw something together" before knocking off your socks with a fabulous six-course meal. The Garda is also the first hotel we visited in Milan that underlines its gay-friendly policy. We loved the blend of an old-school family feel and a completely modern vibe.
Breakfast is available for an extra charge, and it can be served in your guestroom or in the breakfast room.
